This week, our Grade 7 students had opportunity to practise set questions for analysing visual texts. It is surprising how they get thrown when a word is changed (e.g. visualisation to visual text). The students find it difficult to adapt to changes in wording, yet this is something they will encounter in daily life. Practicing this with them now helps them begin to train their minds to make connections and so avoid the sense of helplessness. Thus, they are more prepared to cope with challenges under stressful situations such as tests.<\/p>\n
Grade 8s are deep into their Science fiction unit. A few of them did watch the assigned movie over the weekend, a few even went to Vox cinemas on an outing to watch the latest sci-fi movie, “The Hail Mary Project”. It is encouraging to see students so interested in their learning.\u00a0 Those who did not watch the assigned movie opted to stay in during break and lunch to watch the movie. Having watched “Ender’s Game”, the students analysed the main character by evaluating his strengths and weaknesses according to the attributes of the IB learner profile.<\/p>\n
Finally, Grade 9 students have begun to watch the 1954 version of Orwell’s “Animal Farm.” They show a solid understanding of the allegory after we spent some time exploring the events of the Russian Revolution and relationships among Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. Having explored the history first has helped the students immediately understand the characteristics of the animals in the novel and how their lives play out. Hopefully, we’ll be able to begin watching the 1999 version soon so that the students can practise their compare and contrast skills.<\/p>\n
