This week we had a successful whole class reading session. Children are already in reading groups for guided reading, meaning they read together with an adult supporting them and follow a familiar structure. This week we all read in our groups and then did a swap to read our book, in pairs, with someone from a different group.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the guided reading sessions, we look at pictures and talk in English about what we see and think is happening or try to predict what will happen next. Then, we follow words with our finger and read in unison. In this way, readers support and encourage each other. I ask questions about the story or pictures and encourage children to ask each other questions too, so they are, again, using their verbal skills and extending their English vocabulary. Students have enjoyed taking the \u2018leader\u2019 role in the group: being the one to check everyone is ready and saying go or turn the page!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reading folders also have high frequency word lists and related language activities like wordsearch or find the missing word sentences which again repeat the use of the high-frequency words. Most groups are independent now and can continue to work by themselves after reading the book with an adult. This week was lovely as all children were concentrating on their reading at the same time and then really enjoyed sharing their book with a friend. They feel very proud being able to read a book to a friend so we will continue to do these shared sessions regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n
