Each group will be reading about specific animals or plants in a habitat. We wrote words using new rhyming letter patterns and tried to apply this learning in our own writing.

We reviewed our goals (grow) from earlier this academic year, decided if we had achieved our goal or if we need to continue working on them. After our review, we thought about what we have been doing well (glow) and where we want to go next in our learning journey (grow). This was quite a challenging task for the students which took quite a long time to complete. Your child will share their glows and grows with during the upcoming Student Led Conferences.

During maths this week, we have practised adding and subtracting 10s and 100s mentally. We have discussed the different strategies we have used to solve these problems. The students have been working on their understanding of the concept of time, continuing to revisit Grade 1’s outcomes of knowing o’clock and half-past the hour. They have practised with model clocks on finding different 5 minutes past the hour, ie 25 minutes past, 37 minutes past, etc. and trying to remember which hand is the hour hand and which is the minute hand. They have made a connection between analogue and digital times, as well as, time written in words and written in numbers. Please see the link below if your child would like to practise telling time at home. There a number of different games which support their learning.

Telling time resources

During our UOI sessions, we have discussed what the central ideas means and rewritten it in our own words. We brainstormed what a habitat is and then created our own definition. The students have had time to explore our habitat and environmental books, both real life and digital books. We watched a video about interdependence and reflected on what we learned by listed 3 things we learned, 2 new vocabulary words and asking 1 question. We matched animals to habitats and discussed why certain animals would live in certain habitats. We understand that a habitat will provide for the needs of the plants and animals which live there. We are now beginning to work on our research reports where we will find out more about an animal.

Please see photos here.

Next week:

Literacy

handwriting skills

phonics and rhyming patterns

making blends (l, t and r, for instance: gl, st, br)

research report

guided and independent reading

Maths

mental maths focusing on numeracy

telling time to the 5 minutes

recognising time as AM or PM

time post-assessment

UOI

Finding out about responsibility to the environment

Creating an action plan which will be shared with our family

Researching a chosen animal and creating a fact file for our non-chronological report

In literacy this week, we have met in our new guided reading groups and have been introduced to new reading books – all focused on our on unit of inquiry.
