By analyzing how pressure intensifies with depth, students discovered why the dam’s base must be incredibly thick to withstand the Yangtze River’s force. They also mapped the energy transformations that occur as falling water turns turbines, reinforcing the law that energy is always conserved, never lost. Moving beyond physics, the class is now investigating the social implications of this engineering feat. This next step challenges students to evaluate the human and environmental costs such as community displacement and habitat changes against the benefits of renewable energy. It is a vital lesson in how scientific progress must always be weighed against its impact on society.

Our Grade 9 MYP scientists recently used the Three Gorges Dam as a massive laboratory to master the mechanics of fluid pressure.
