This week in Grade 1, we continued our Unit of Inquiry How We Organize Ourselves by extending our maths learning from 2D shapes to 3D shapes. Previously, students used 2D shapes to create a community and think about what a community needs to function. They designed important places such as hospitals, schools, police stations, homes, shops, and parks, and explained why these places are important for people.<\/p>\n

This week, students explored 3D shapes using real materials and classroom objects. We focused on identifying and naming shapes such as cubes, cylinders, cones, and spheres, and describing what we noticed about them. Students made connections to the real world by finding 3D shapes around the classroom and discussing where we might see these shapes in our community buildings.<\/p>\n

To deepen our learning, students began planning how they could use 3D shapes to create a new version of their community. They worked together, shared materials, and explained their ideas using full sentences, linking their maths learning to our unit focus on how communities are organiz ed and how different places help meet people\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n
