The curriculum is centered around the guiding question: <b data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"176\">&#8220;What happens when electrons are transferred?&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">This week, we focused on the principles of <b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"43\">Oxidation and Reduction (Redox)<\/b>. Students have been applying their prior knowledge to master several complex concepts:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"6\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Redox Definitions:<\/b> Identifying reactions in terms of oxygen\/hydrogen transfer, electron movement, and changes in oxidation numbers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Oxidation States:<\/b> Applying systematic rules to determine oxidation numbers and identifying oxidizing and reducing agents.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Equation Mastery:<\/b> Writing ionic equations and balancing redox reactions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Activity Series:<\/b> Using chemical data to predict how different metals will react.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">We also introduced <b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"19\">Redox Titrations<\/b>, which serves as the bridge to our work next week as we begin exploring <b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"108\">Electrolytic Cells<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\"><b data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Grade 11: The nature of covalent bonding<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">Our Grade 11 chemists have been conducting an in-depth study of <b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"64\">Covalent Bonding<\/b> and the electrostatic attractions that hold molecules together. Key areas of focus this week included:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"11\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Molecular Structure:<\/b> Using the <b data-path-to-node=\"11,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"31\">Octet Rule<\/b> to deduce Lewis formulas and predict the arrangement of electron pairs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Bond Properties:<\/b> Explaining the relationship between single, double, and triple bonds in terms of their length and strength.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Geometry and Polarity:<\/b> Utilizing <b data-path-to-node=\"11,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"33\">VSEPR theory<\/b> to determine molecular shapes and calculating net dipole moments based on electronegativity values.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Intermolecular Forces:<\/b> Investigating how London dispersion forces, dipole-dipole interactions, and hydrogen bonding dictate physical properties such as volatility, solubility, and electrical conductivity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Looking Ahead:<\/b> Next week, the focus shifts to student-led inquiry.
