Good afternoon,<\/span><\/p>\n

This week we are sharing with you a selection of photographs showcasing imaginative role-play taking place in KG1 over the last few weeks. This type of activity is not only great fun and a chance for children to develop imagination, it is also a very important form of play for young children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When engaging in role play, children make sense of the world around them by exploring familiar experiences and social roles. They practise communication and language skills as they negotiate roles, share ideas, and use new vocabulary, while also developing social and emotional skills such as cooperation, empathy, turn-taking, and confidence. While exploring both independent and collaborative role play, children plan, problem-solve, and connect ideas, using a wide range of resources creatively to represent their thinking and experiences. The photographs below show children engaged in role play scenarios they created themselves, including police, doctor, home settings, birthday parties, teachers and students, restaurants, hair salons and shops.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also in class this week, we have been exploring the concept of <\/span>perspective<\/span><\/i> in an age-appropriate way for our KG1 children. After reading the book <\/span>Duck! Rabbit!<\/span><\/i>\u2014in which two unseen narrators disagree about whether an illustration shows a duck or a rabbit\u2014the children had great fun looking at a variety of optical illusions in pairs and sharing what they could see. Together, we noticed that we did not always see the same thing, and that this was both interesting and enjoyable. Later, we explored our different opinions about various pieces of art, again recognising differing perspectives and highlighting that our differences are what make life interesting and valuable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next week will be <\/span>Oman Week<\/span><\/i> at ABIS. In KG1, we will spend several days focusing on a different aspect of Omani life and culture each day, exploring why these are important and meaningful. The week will conclude with a wonderful celebration not only of Oman\u2019s rich culture, but also of the many nationalities and cultures represented within our school community, in the form of the ABIS International Food Evening on Thursday evening (5th February) from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. This was a lovely event last year and promises to be just as enjoyable again this year. <\/span><\/p>\n

Reminder: All students are encouraged to wear either Omani traditional clothing, or colours from the Omani flag on Sunday, in celebration of ABIS’s Oman Week.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
