By deploying quadrat sampling, a fundamental technique used by ecologists worldwide; students transitioned from theoretical concepts to hands-on scientific inquiry. The exercise required a sharp eye for biodiversity and precise mathematical application as they calculated population densities and estimated the abundance of local plant species. Beyond the technical data, the survey served as a vital exercise in collaborative fieldwork, requiring teams to coordinate effectively in a dynamic outdoor environment. This practical experience has not only provided a window into the health of our local ecosystem but has also equipped our students with the foundational analytical skills necessary for their future environmental studies.

This week, our Grade 11 Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) students swapped their textbooks for field gear to master the art of ecological surveying.
