Another busy week completed in classroom 2B. Students made their final adjustments, on Sunday, for their community projects. They looked at the rubric to make sure they included everything. We discussed how their community can make people feel happy, healthy, and comfortable. On Monday and Tuesday students presented their community projects to the classroom. Yesterday, they\u00a0 finished their Unit of Inquiry by completing the end of the unit reflection. The students really focused on their self management skills, social skills, and communication skills\u00a0 throughout this unit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During English students participated in centers that contained guided reading, colorful semantics, Reading a A to Z, and making CVC words while scribing in their writing journals. During phonics we reviewed glued sounds an and am, and r-controlled sounds. For writing, as a whole class, we created a letter to Mr. Dominic, requesting two new additions to our playground. This tied into the unit of inquiry. Students chose things that would make them happy, healthy, and comfortable. That letter will be emailed to Mr. Dominic and we can’t wait for the response.<\/span><\/p>\n

In math this week measurement was introduced, focusing on the centimeter and using rulers. Students measured classroom objects and their own feet. We began looking at the daily temperature in Sohar, every morning.\u00a0 Throughout\u00a0 the weeks to come we will continue looking at the temperature locally and globally. This will tie in nicely to the upcoming unit of inquiry, Where We Are In Place and Time. Students were introduced to math centers this week. Two centers were working with the teachers and the other three were independent activities. This will enable teachers to work in small groups and focus on math concepts students need more practice with.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have completed our UOI, How We Organize Ourselves, and we will begin Where We Are In Place and Time Next week. Our central idea is, \u2018People have different types of homes around the world for specific reasons\u2019. We will look at biomes and the materials used to build different types of homes and how they are influenced by the biome it is located in. Students will complete research about a specific biome and the group project in art will be making a house representing the materials used in that part of the world. The homeroom class will support this by completing research and\u00a0 giving the time needed to plan and design these houses. I look forward to the end result. please look below for the new UOI flyer.<\/span><\/p>\n

For English next week we will dive into research, an important skill the students will carry on throughout their educational journey. In phonics we will look at glued exceptions that include -old, -ild, -ind, -olt, and -ost. These are glued exceptions because they don’t follow the rules and use a long vowel instead of a short vowel. We will continue reviewing closed syllables and r-controlled verbs. Our writing will be focused on retrieving facts from our research and\u00a0 summarizing the information found.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next week in math\u00a0 we will begin practicing spelling the days of the week and the months of the year. In the upcoming weeks the students will have a spelling test for the days of the week and the months of the year. We will practice every morning reciting both the days and months. I will also make sure they have time to practice writing those words in their writing journals. We will continue looking at measurement in centimeters and meters. Students will also look at inches because most standard rulers have one side for centimeters and one side for inches. Students must be able to differentiate the two when using a ruler. Through our centers they will review number sense.<\/span><\/p>\n
