But this week, we took a crucial step back from the playing and singing to engage in deep reflection—a vital part of growing as musicians!

Early Learners: The Language of Feeling

Our youngest musicians had a fantastic week focusing on expression and feeling. As they continue practicing their concert songs, the focus has shifted from what to play to how to play it.

Musical Storytelling: This week, we used our reflection time to talk about the emotions in our songs. They were able to identify and show the difference between a happy, light voice and a sleepy, soft voice.

Active Listening: Reflection for our Early Learners often means listening critically. They did a wonderful job listening to each other and identifying where they needed to adjust their voices or keep a steadier beat.

Upper Primary: Timbre, Teamwork, and Next Steps!

For our older students, the concept of timbre (tone colour) and expression was the central focus of their reflection this week. Using their Music Reflection Sheets, they thought deeply about their individual “musical voices” and how they contribute to the ensemble.

The Power of Timbre: Students explored how changing the way they played—whether on an instrument or with their voice—could alter the “personality” of the music. They reflected on which tone colours they used and why.

ATL Skills in Action: The reflection sheet highlighted amazing use of Approaches to Learning (ATLs). They used their Thinking Skills to analyze problems (“My challenge was…” and “I overcame it by…”). They also demonstrated strong Self-Management by setting concrete goals for their next practice sessions, focusing on tone, timing, or expression.

What’s On Deck for Next Week?

With the concert drawing nearer, the insights gained from this week’s reflection will guide our practices next week:

Ensemble Balance: We will be applying our reflections on timbre and expression to ensure no one instrument or voice overpowers the others. We want to hear the whole beautiful harmony!

Expression Polish: Based on the goals set this week, we’ll fine-tune the dynamics (how loud or soft we play) and phrasing (how we shape the musical sentences) to make the performances truly expressive and engaging.

Keep practicing those concert pieces at home!
