This week we spent a lot of time finishing up reading assessments (we are almost done!) and completing some unfinished work. Alongside this, we continued with our phonics, focusing on digraphs, syllables, and trick words. Students also practiced the spelling rules for c, k, and ck. We’ve been reinforcing sentence editing; capital letters at the beginning and punctuation at the end. Please continue to encourage this at home.

Literacy & Phonics

This week we kept working on digraphs, and students had fun coming up to the board to say their sounds and add words. We also explored:

Syllables and trick words

The spelling rules for c, k, and ck

Daily sentence editing, where we practiced capitalisation and correct punctuation. Please continue reinforcing this at home!

We also began learning about the 6+1 Traits of Writing, which help us understand what makes writing strong. These traits include:

Ideas (main message)

Organization (structure)

Voice (personal tone)

Word Choice (vocabulary)

Sentence Fluency (flow and rhythm)

Conventions (mechanical correctness)

Presentation (how it looks on the page)

Through mentor texts and class discussions, students are beginning to see how these traits apply to their own writing.

Next week, we will set up literacy centers. Students will rotate through guided reading, word work, sentence work, and Nessy Phonics. We’ll also begin learning about closed syllables (one short vowel followed by a consonant, like cat or mask).

Math

Students practiced ordering numbers, skip counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and tens. We even started tally marks yesterday and they were very excited about that.

Next week, we’ll move into bar graph (ways of representing data). We’ll make fun graphs about our favourite fruits, sports, numbers in our names, and subjects. We’ll also continue comparing numbers with greater than, less than, and ordering.

Unit of Inquiry

This week, students proudly presented their Shoebox Autobiographies. We displayed the boxes and on Sunday we will be doing a classroom “walk-about” to see each other’s work. We will use Venn Diagrams, so that students can compare their cultures with a partner’s, noticing both similarities and differences. We are discovering that, while we come from many different places, we all share traditions, foods, celebrations, languages, and beliefs that connect us.

Next week, we’ll finish our reflection on Who We Are. Students will:

Draw three things that represent their culture

Write three words that describe our classroom culture

Answer the question: What can I do to help my classroom be a good learning environment?

Important Information

Saturday Sports Club (Rotation 1)

Grades 2–8, Indoor Football

Dates: Sept 20 – Oct 25, Saturdays 9:00–10:00 a.m.

Cost: OMR 5 (one-time payment for 5 weeks)
Upcoming Assemblies

Sept 25: Grades 4–6

Oct 16: Grades 2–3

It’s hard to believe we’ve already completed our first month of school!
