Grade 8 students are nearing the completion of an exciting unit in MYP Visual Arts, where they have been exploring the art of printmaking with a focus on the theme of nature. This unit introduced them to the creative and technical process of relief printmaking, in which designs are carved into a raised surface, such as linoleum. Ink is applied to the raised areas, while the carved sections remain blank, resulting in bold and dynamic contrasts in the final prints.<\/p>\n

At the start of the unit, students explored the school campus, capturing photographs of nature, architecture, and human activity to inspire their work. These images guided their initial thumbnail sketches, allowing them to experiment with a range of compositions. After careful evaluation, they developed detailed final sketches, which served as blueprints for carving their linoleum blocks.<\/p>\n

Now, as the unit draws to a close, students have brought their designs to life through the printmaking process. They have refined their carving and printing techniques, creating unique and expressive final prints. This hands-on experience has not only enhanced their artistic and technical skills but also encouraged them to take risks, demonstrating the IB learner profile attribute of being risk-takers.<\/p>\n
