A short, yet important week in Grade 6 as we really push on with our new stand alone Literacy and Math units. To give us the space for these new focuses, we took a slight breather from our \u2018Who We are in Place and Time\u2019 unit of inquiry into migration. This also gave us time to reflect on what we have learnt so far in this main unit of inquiry and to consider where we might want to go next. <\/span><\/p>\n

In Literacy, we have started our new personal narrative unit. This will be our reading and writing focus for the next 5 weeks or so. We have started by investigating the features of personal narratives and creating keys. We are now considering the type of personal narratives we would like to construct. To help us select, we brainstormed key moments from our lives that we thought were worth sharing, then placed them in chronological order, then added the key emotions from the memory. Finally, we selected our favorite 4 ideas to take forward. We then pitched these ideas to classmates to get a sense of where which would be the most successful and ultimately chose one main idea. We have now started to put that idea into a story planner. Please see Seesaw for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Mathematics, we have been starting our inquiry into how to convert decimal numbers into fractions. In particular we have been looking into how to say decimal numbers and how the sound of a decimal number gives us clues when placing it onto a timeline and turning it into a fraction. These decimal number sessions have created an engaging bridge week between our first number sense unit and our fractions unit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unit of Inquiry: We will be looking at the impact of migration on a country and <\/span>\u2018our changing sense of identity and place\u2019.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Literacy: We will be moving on to the drafting phase of our personal narratives with a particular focus on creating a hook and an engaging introduction to our stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mathematics: We will be progressing boldly into our unit on fractions and the central idea of\u00a0 “Understanding fractions empowers us to navigate and make sense of the world around us.”<\/span><\/p>\n
