After reading, students reflected using the following questions:
-Was it difficult for the girl to decide to keep her name or change it?
-What does this story say about Unhei’s culture (Korea) and herself?
-How does understanding yourself help to connect to others?

We also inquired into children rights, where students showed their prior knowledge of what rights they believe they have highlighting the rights of education, fun, good health, food and clothes. In small groups, they looked at the UN Child Rights and categorised them into one of these 4 categories; Survival, Protection, Participation, and Development. Students recognised that some of the rights fit into more than one category and discussed with their group and others about why they thought it belonged in the category they chose. Following this, students did a word inquiry into the words ‘rights’, ‘influence’, and ‘advocate’.

Students explored biographies in Epic to gather information about the features a biography has. Students recognised that biographies are all about people and their lives. They noted that most biographies have photos with captions, table of contents, different sections, ‘did you know’ fact boxes, glossary and an index.

Mathematicians showed us what they knew already about place value at the beginning of the week. We continued to explore this through 2 different maths games, Close To 100 and Race To 100, which both use a 100s chart and students played against a partner using either multiplication, division, addition or subtraction, practising their mental maths and problem solving skills. Students also used creative thinking skills to make a ‘Figure Me Out’ poster to share information about themselves related to numbers. We learnt students’ ages, birthdays, months and years, along with the number of siblings, countries they lived in and so much more!

Looking forward to next week where we will continue to look at rights, and explore if we have these rights then what is our responsibility. Through biographies, students will learn about influential people and how they were able to make an impact on others, especially noting some of the qualities these people have and what type of action they took. We will begin to look at how to write a biography and different skills and knowledge we will need before trying to write our own biography.

Please help to remind your child to bring their iPad to school EVERYDAY and have it charged. We often use iPads throughout the day to upload things on to Seesaw and to utilise the different resources it has to offer.

REMINDER: Sunday is a holiday and there will be no school. Enjoy the long weekend and we are excited to be back in class on Monday!
