As part of the PYP to MYP transition<\/strong> process this week, along with thinking about the importance of self-management and good communication, Grade 6 students were encouraged to consider the IB core value of open-mindedness. <\/strong>Important questions were “<\/strong>How can we ‘model up’ what it means to be open-minded and welcoming?”,<\/em> \u00a0<\/strong>In grade 7 we are also talking about what it means to have an inclusive mindset. The question we are asking ourselves is “<\/strong>When we meet new and different people, do we focus on what we have in common or they ways in which we are different? Why?”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

What were the key takeaways from these ongoing conversations?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, we know that open-mindedness and inclusion are super important values in the IB and at ABIS. They’re all about being open to new ideas and making sure everyone feels welcomed, included and safe, no matter how different they are.<\/p>\n

Open-mindedness<\/strong> means being cool<\/span> with different opinions and perspectives. It’s like having an open door in your mind, ready to welcome new thoughts and possibilities. When you’re openminded, you listen to others without judging them, and you try to understand where they’re coming from. It’s all about being respectful and making everyone feel like their voice matters.<\/em><\/p>\n

Inclusion is all about celebrating our differences and making sure everyone feels like they belong.<\/strong> We treat everyone with kindness, respect, and fairness. In an inclusive community, we give everyone a chance to join in, learn, and grow. We support and cheer each other on, knowing that we all have strengths and challenges.<\/p>\n

By being open-minded and inclusive, we make our community awesome! <\/strong>We become more understanding, caring, and friendly. We learn from each other’s lived experiences, cultures, languages, interests, and grow as individuals. In an inclusive community, we stand against any unfairness or prejudice<\/em>,<\/span> and we work together to make the world a better place where everyone feels accepted.<\/p>\n

So, let’s keep an open mind and welcome everyone.\u00a0 Let’s treat each other with kindness, understanding and respect. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging, feels safe and knows that their voice matters. Our differences make us awesome, and when we embrace them, when we celebrate them – we make the world a much more wonderful and welcoming place for everyone.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
