Dear Primary Families,<\/span><\/p>\n

Thank you for your support, understanding, and flexibility with the changes to the school hours this week. It has required a level of adaptability from everyone and I have been impressed by how our students – and teachers – have been able to quickly adjust.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are often asked for suggestions as to ways in which parents may support their child at home. Below are five easy ways you can assist your child’s learning at home, whether it’s formal education related to school or incidental learning through play, exploration, and life experiences. By utilizing these five strategies, you can help your child become a lifelong learner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Take an inquiry stance<\/b><\/p>\n

Meet a question with a question:<\/b> How could you find that out?<\/span><\/p>\n

Be prepared to inquire together:<\/b> Let\u2019s figure it out together!<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask an open-ended question:<\/b> What do you notice?<\/span><\/p>\n

Be a learner:<\/b> Here\u2019s how I am going to find out<\/span><\/p>\n

Support conceptual understanding<\/b><\/p>\n

Value Process<\/b><\/p>\n

How did you do that?<\/span><\/p>\n

Why did you do that?<\/span><\/p>\n

What strategy did you use?<\/span><\/p>\n

Harness the power of key concepts<\/b><\/p>\n

What does it look like? (Form)<\/span><\/p>\n

How does it work? (Function)<\/span><\/p>\n

How is it connected to other things? (Connection)<\/span><\/p>\n

How does it change? (Change)<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is it like that? \/ Why is it the way it is? (Causation)<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the different points of view? (Perspective)<\/span><\/p>\n

What are our responsibilities? (Responsibility)<\/span><\/p>\n

Support your child\u2019s agency<\/b><\/p>\n

Invite and involve their voice: <\/b>Let them express themselves<\/span><\/p>\n

Support their choices: <\/b>What choices are you making as a learner?<\/span><\/p>\n

Emphasize ownership: <\/b>You\u2019re in the driver\u2019s seat<\/span><\/p>\n

Prioritize reflection<\/b><\/p>\n

Get them thinking about their thinking<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you know?<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes you think that?<\/span><\/p>\n

Is there another way you could do that?<\/span><\/p>\n

What did you find easy or challenging? Why?<\/span><\/p>\n

Give feedback that goes beyond the moment<\/b><\/p>\n

Teach the learner, not the learning:<\/b> Move from asking, \u2018How are you doing?\u2019 to, \u2018Where are you going?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Give specific feedback on the process:<\/b> I like how you did \u2026 What might you try doing next?<\/span><\/p>\n
