Service as action stands as a fundamental component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), aiming to cultivate compassionate community members dedicated to making a positive impact on others and the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

After completing their unit on fostering sustainable interactions between humans and ecosystems, ninth-grade science students at ABIS undertook a project led by their science teacher, Mr. Duncan MAKORI. The initiative focused on raising awareness about school biodiversity by scientifically naming native and invasive plant species. The students, engaging in thorough planning and coordination, aimed to instill environmental consciousness and a sense of responsibility towards nature.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project involved every student in various capacities, allowing them to achieve diverse learning outcomes. Tasks included forming small groups to survey, identify, and record native and invasive plant species within the school compound using scientific names sourced from online databases. Students researched and gathered information on each species, considering their ecological roles, characteristics, and any pertinent facts. <\/span>At the school’s design workshop, the students crafted eco-friendly labels and stands, while emphasizing safety.<\/span><\/p>\n

The subsequent phases encompassed the installation of labels, presentations, and interactions with peers, teachers, and the broader school community. Finally, a reflection session provided an opportunity for students to discuss their learnings, challenges faced, and the anticipated impact of their project.<\/span><\/p>\n
