Grade 7 English Language Acquisition students are becoming more and more familiar with using a variety of note-taking and visual thinking techniques. We use them to build background, develop vocabulary and deconstruct ideas. We use them at the beginning of a new unit or skill focus, mid-inquiry and as an assessment tool for showing our learning. On tool we use consistently is the Frayer Mod<\/strong>el <\/strong>(a.k.a. 4-square).<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

How does a Frayer Model work?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

As a Graphic organizer, it allows learners to inquire into an idea, phrase or word from<\/div>\n
multiple angles. Whilst it most common form is the 4-square, in Grade 7 & 8, we have used as few as 3 sections and as many as 6, depending on the concept or word. Benefits of using this particular graphic organizer or visual thinking strategy,\u00a0 is that it addresses higher-order thinking and creativity, as well as word anatomy & meaning<\/b>. Students are able to become independent with this model, as it provides an excellent strategy for teaching, learning, and expanding one’s receptive language skills. The Frayer Model is also an excellent study tool, a great way for reviewing what you know and identifying areas of understanding that need to be developed.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
