I had the pleasure of supporting our grade 5 students with their current unit of inquiry which has included a focus on the journey food takes from production to our tables. As part of this, the students took part in the “Great Grade 5 Cook Off”. This provided an opportunity for the students to become chefs and to prepare a meal in our school kitchen. Also, this week saw all of our students from grade 1 to grade 11 performing in our whole school concert. So, this week especially, we have seen many fine examples of our students being risk-takers.

Encouraging our children to be risk-takers plays a crucial role in their overall development and prepares them for a successful future. Being a PYP risk-taker enables our children to step out of their comfort zones and explore new possibilities. It empowers them to embrace challenges and develop problem-solving skills. By taking risks, they learn resilience and gain the confidence to overcome obstacles they may encounter along their educational journey.

Furthermore, being a risk-taker nurtures a love for learning in our children. It fuels their curiosity, encourages them to ask questions, and explore new ideas. By taking calculated risks, they develop critical thinking skills and become independent, self-directed learners.

Equally important is the role of risk-taking in fostering creativity and innovation. PYP students who are willing to take risks are more likely to think outside the box, develop unique perspectives, and find innovative solutions. These skills are essential in an ever-changing world, where adaptability and creative problem-solving are highly valued.

As parents, we can support our children by creating a supportive environment that celebrates efforts rather than just outcomes. Let’s encourage them to take on challenges, embrace new experiences, and learn from both successes and failures. By modeling a risk-taking mindset ourselves, we can inspire our children to become confident, resilient, and innovative individuals.

Thank you for your ongoing support in fostering a risk-taking culture within our PYP community.

If you have any questions about the Primary Years Programme, please ask.

Best regards,

Matthew Richmond

PYP Coordinator

Why should our students be risk-takers?
