\"\"This week was a busy one, with a nice little unexpected pit-stop in the middle. We shifted from inquiring into Biomes & Climate Zones<\/strong> to considering Climate Change.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We used a news article to learn more about the impact of deadly Cyclone Freddy in Malawi and Mozambique<\/a> recently. We used this, and other articles, to develop a greater understanding English sentence structure a.k.a.<\/em> parts of speech <\/strong>a.k.a\u00a0<\/em>nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs.<\/strong> Students had to find clear examples of these elements within the articles we read for I&S.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two ways students practiced their Listening & Speaking skills this week include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0<\/strong> Teacher Read Aloud – <\/strong>students were guided to take ‘mental notes’ in order to respond to oral comprehension questions at the end of the read aloud. – this is a good strategy to practice at home with your child. It helps strengthen a range of memory and language skills.<\/em><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a01-minute Thought Project –\u00a0<\/strong>“Would you rather …?” Explain! Students took one minute to make a choice from a prompt, then verbally shared their decision with an explanation for the choices. These were lively conversations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We researched and discussed questions like “How much would the sea level need to rise for Sohar to become an underwater city<\/em>?<\/em>“<\/strong> and “What would happen if all the icebergs in the Arctic melted?”\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

    Next week will be even busier! Students will start putting some of the skills we practiced this week to work. They will engage in independent inquiry into The Impact of Human Actions on Climate Change.<\/em><\/p>\n

    One organizational tip for students … please come prepared<\/strong> with pencils, rulers, tools for cutting and coloring, and make sure iPads are fully charged.<\/p>\n
