Continuing with where we left off and starting new units, we have had a number of productive learning engagements this week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please click the link below to see the photos and video snippets from this week:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1BUfZp_xA147n6opDUcsLxidGjEcH5Kr8?usp=sharing\"><b>Grade 6 Week 16 in pictures:2022 2023<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Integrated Unit of Inquiry<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>New Unit on Migration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We set off on our journey into our new unit on migration by using a dictionary to find what migration means. While students worked to come up with the definition, they also added various reasons as to why people migrate. Students observed some real photos related to migration and used the thinking routine \u201cI see, I think, I wonder\u201d to show their previous knowledge. We have started reading the book \u2018A long walk to water\u2019 by Linda Sue Park, which recounts the story of one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. As mentioned in the broadcaster earlier, students are now being exposed to some \u2018unfairy\u2019 tales and more to come, as we go.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Language: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week we have<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">revisited our understanding of Personal Recount this week and focused on the vocabulary ideas. We used helper mats to learn and use new and unfamiliar words in our writing. We made sentences using new adjectives and adverbs. We also practised starting sentences in interesting ways using the ISPACED acronym.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Exhibition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the Teachers\u2019 meeting this week, we had the whole primary staff review and comment on the central idea drafts the students have come up with. Students will then use this feedback to finalise their central ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Mathematics<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week students have started doing a mix of percentage and fraction work in math maintenance. We have observed that some students have a strong basic understanding of these concepts while others need more input and support. We intend to mini-lessons as we go on. We are also integrating Data Handling into our UOI as this will help students understand migration statistics and analyse migration patterns.\u00a0 For example, this week students looked at a line graph that shows the number of immigrants around the world. They learnt how to read a line graph and figured out the elements of a graph &#8211; axes, scale, legend, data set, title of the graph and the axes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Homework<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please remember that there is homework every day except over the weekend. It is important that students are reading, writing and doing Maths practice on a daily\u00a0 basis.
