Because of this you may notice some extra items in your children’s school bags as we tidy up this week and they are able to bring home among other things, samples of their work. As we begin reflecting on the year, it is important to take a moment to gain some perspective and recognise how far our students/ your children have come, how much they have grown and progressed. Part of what students will be bringing are samples of their work, please do have a look with them. You may even find doing a direct comparison between what they could do at the beginning of the year and now, very insightful and a proud moment 🙂

Home learning

Thank you for your continued support of students completing their home learning because this really does consolidate what they have been learning in school. Cumulatively, if a student completes an hour of homework a night, compared to those who don’t, they have completed (approximately) an additional 200 hours of study per year. The science shows that there is a correlation between engagement and achievement so this is very good practice indeed.

Homework for this week has been to continue with reading and math. This is part of normal routine and should continue over the summer break if students wish to maintain their current reading level.

Reading, Writing and Inquiry

This week students continued with their ‘How we Express ourselves.’ This is a unit where students will investigate the different forms of Art, expression through art, the making, interpretation and appreciation of artifacts. This week students made play-dough with the littlest learners of the school. It was great to see some big sisters and brothers working with these students all having fun making play-dough for their sculptures.

Mathematics

For math this week students have been working on completing end of year assessments for problem solving.

Please see below for one of the problems. Are you smarter than a 6th grader- can you do it 🙂

Please talk with your children about this. They might surprise you.

The Problem

Saif has glued some cubes together to make a large solid cube with nine small cubes showing on a face. This coming Sunday we will have a combined share lunch with all grade 6 students and a number of their teachers. For this please allow students to bring a little food/ drink to share. Thank you.

This week we had a shared lunch with Ms. Maryam our Grade 6 class Teaching assistant that is on Maternity leave. Yes she came back to see us and to share a lunch with us. She and baby are fine, students very much enjoyed seeing her and sharing a meal with her. We look forward to seeing her back again at the beginning of next year.

Regarding shared lunch- Grade 6 would like to have an end of year shared lunch on Sunday of next week.
