The novel&#8217;s protagonist, Okonkwo, exemplifies the struggle of native cultures to persist in their traditions in the face of  European imperialism. Never a very likable or relatable character, especially given the treatment of his wives and children, we nevertheless felt a pang on his behalf as we discussed the novel&#8217;s brutal climax in our live lesson.
