Part of that investigation includes hands-on lab work in order to work with dissolving mixtures and pulling them apart again. To do this, students mixed the solute (aluminum potassium sulfate) with the solvent water. After dissolving, students hung some string into the solution. As the solution evaporated, crystals formed (see photos).
