<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Thank you to everyone who bought the homemade goodies from our fundraisers last week, and a BIG thank you to the G7 students & parents for any extra shopping trips and food preparation support you gave to this project. Together we raised about 100 OMR ($256 US). Proceeds from this fundraiser are going toward improving the bedrooms & lofts, and buying an industrial strength washing machine for Foyer House Orphanage in the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n
Of the many benefits of this type of \u201cservice learning\u201d fundraising project, are the opportunities to apply several real-world math skills, including data collection, unit conversion, spreadsheet practice, using fractions, decimals, & percents, cost analysis, logic, reasoning and more. Students collaboratively chose an item to sell and determined from a recipe all the costs of the ingredients and used this data to analyze costs, pricing, and profit. One rule was that it had to be \u201chomemade\u201d not a mix or simply store bought. This provided an extra challenge of learning how to prepare food which students can always benefit from doing.<\/p>\n
Another aspect of this project was about finding the most sustainable products, locally made \/ grown whenever possible. We also tried to avoid using plastics and styrofoam when serving the food.<\/p>\n
The donation has been sent and received and the money is already at work improving the lives of children in the DRC.<\/p>\n
