What Is There To Do In Sohar?

The Great Outdoors

Sohar is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream come true.  From your front door, you are a short drive from fantastic hiking, camping, snorkelling and diving. A 4X4 vehicle is a good idea, as the best things to see in Oman are off the beaten path, and half the fun is getting there. Many teachers leave the city on the weekends and head out to their favorite wadi or mountain trail.

Entertainment

The recently opened Sohar City Cinema is a four screen multiplex showing the most recent Hollywood blockbusters and films from all around the region.  Admissions and concessions are very reasonably priced, and the theatre is comfortable and air-conditioned. Local community groups often organize events in Sohar. To learn more, subscribe to Sohar Calling, a locally generated newsletter highlighting the goings on in and around Sohar. (To sign up, send an email to soharcalling@gmail.com.) The Royal Muscat Opera House has a world class line up of classical performances, operas, and ballets all reasonably priced. Not to mention the fact that there is always something going on in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Dining

Sohar has a plethora of restaurants serving food from all over the region.  Whether you are in the mood for Turkish, Indian, Iranian, or Lebanese, there are lots of places for you to try. All are reasonably priced, and many of them have home delivery, too. For more upscale options, there are the restaurants at The Sohar Beach Hotel and The Crowne Plaza.

For those moments of weakness, we have your fast food options covered, with McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Subway, and KFC each having locations in Sohar. Penny’s Cafe is a popular option for teachers that live around Palm Gardens. Penny’s features fresh salads and sandwiches, as well as juices and coffee. Newly opened Mani’s Cafe which serves western style food is a good alternative to Penny’s and is located near Sallan roundabout.

Other popular places to eat includes Mohammed’s (Arabic) on the corniche, Al Forn (Italian), Mandarin (Chinese) and Dawat (Indian).

Sports And Leisure

Beautiful year round weather means that Sohar is a great place for sport.  Some apartment compounds have outdoor facilities for swimming, or for football or basketball. Most feature indoor facilities with full gyms and racquetball courts. ABIS has a full-sized gymnasium, and in the evenings there are organized sporting activities like basketball, badminton, and football.  Plus many teachers take advantage of the swimming pool for a quick before or after school swim. Bicyclists or runners won’t have too much trouble finding a route. The Sohar Beach Hotel offers a weekly yoga class.  The Crowne Plaza has it’s own 2-lane bowling alley. So whatever your game, Sohar has got you covered.
